Research project launching on novel and innovative remediation technologies

Image
The International Atomic Energy Association (IAEA) is launching a new four-year Coordinated Research Project (CRP) to identify novel and innovative low-cost environmental remediation technologies. A key outcome of the project will be to emphasize the effectiveness of simple remediation approaches and need to prioritize the remediation of contaminated land. The project aims to enhance capability and strengthen the implementation of environmental remediation. Many IAEA members have been impacted by radioactive contamination due to past activities, accidents, or as a result of naturally occurring sources that have contaminated the ground. Where contamination poses a risk to people and the environment , monitoring and/or remediation is necessary to break the pathway between the contaminant source and the receptors. Limited resources are a key obstacle to remediation efforts. Hence, what is needed are safe, simple and sustainable solutions that balance cost, environmental impact, and socia...

What is climate change? A really simple guide

Image
Human activities are causing world temperatures to rise, with more intense heatwaves and rising sea-levels among the consequences. Things are likely to worsen in the coming decades, but scientists argue urgent action can still limit the worst effects. What is climate change? Climate change is the long-term shift in the Earth's average temperatures and weather conditions. Over the last decade, the world was on average around 1.2C warmer than during the late 19th Century. How are humans causing climate change? The climate has changed naturally throughout the Earth's history. But natural causes cannot explain the particularly rapid warming over the last century, according to the UN's climate body, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). This warming has been caused by human activities, mainly the widespread use of fossil fuels - coal, oil and gas - in homes, factories and transport. When fossil fuels burn, they release greenhouse gases - mostly carbon dioxide (C...

Climate Refugees: The Intersection of Environmental Change and Human Mobility

Description: The term " climate refugees " refers to individuals and communities forced to leave their homes due to sudden or gradual changes in their environment caused by climate change. This can include rising sea levels, extreme weather events, droughts, and other environmental stressors. As climate impacts intensify, migration becomes a critical adaptation strategy for affected populations. This phenomenon raises significant social, economic, and political challenges, including the need for policies that address the rights and protections of those displaced. Understanding the intersection of environmental change and human mobility is crucial for developing comprehensive responses to this global issue. Revolutionizing Lithium-Ion Capacitors: The Role of High Entropy Doping

Description: High entropy doping is transforming the landscape of lithium -ion capacitors (LiC), delivering remarkable improvements in capacity, stability, and energy density. By introducing a diverse mix of elements into the LiC structure, this innovative approach enhances electrochemical performance and extends device lifespan. As a breakthrough in energy storage technology, high entropy doping could lead to more efficient, durable, and high-performance lithium-ion capacitors, supporting advancements in everything from consumer electronics to electric vehicles.
